Hospice Volunteer Spotlight

In our home health and hospice agency, our volunteer, Elizabeth, makes a big difference in the lives of those under our care. As part of Volunteer Week, we’re shining a spotlight on her and her remarkable acts of kindness and compassion. Her dedication is inspiring, and we are grateful to have her among us.

Finding Purpose in Service

"When I relocated to Sacramento, I sought to continue the meaningful work I had been doing as a hospice volunteer in Orlando, FL," Elizabeth shares, reflecting on the motivations that led her to us at Amari. "In Orlando, I worked in an in-patient facility; going to patient homes has been a new experience for me." It was this desire for continuity in service that drew her to our program, sparking a sense of unwavering purpose.

With every visit, our volunteer touches the hearts of our patients, adding a sense of lightness to their day. Reflecting on a particular memory, Elizabeth recalls the warmth of a heartfelt embrace from a special patient she's been devoted to for over a year. "I think the most memorable experience for me was when she told me she loved me and hugged me so tight. That was a really good day," she fondly reminisces.

Helping patients and families

For families navigating difficult times, just the presence of a compassionate companion offers comfort amidst uncertainty. "I think that for a family to know that their loved one has some assistance when they can’t do everything for them or be there all the time is comforting," our volunteer reflects. In the quiet moments shared, bills are paid, conversations flow, and the feeling of isolation is lightened, offering respite to both patient and family.

Lessons of Gratitude

In the delicate dance of life and loss, our volunteer finds true meaning from her volunteer work. "I have learned about practicing gratitude; every day is a gift," she shares. Through compassion, she has a greater appreciation of the fleeting beauty of each moment, and the fragility of life.

To those considering a path of service, our volunteer extends a heartfelt invitation. "Knowing that you can make a difference in the life of not only the patient but also their families, it's a huge gift to give."  For those interested in volunteer service, "You can volunteer as little or as much as you would like to, you can volunteer in a way that fits your own schedule, if you want to do it, you can!"

Elizabeth is an example of the human heart. Hers is a journey defined by compassion, guided by empathy, and fueled by a commitment to serve. As we celebrate her invaluable contributions, let us be inspired to walk alongside her. Here at Amari Home Health and Hospice we want to thank Elizabeth for the incredible work she does, and the lives she touches every day.
